How to Calculate Fleet Fuel Savings

Annual Savings = Annual Miles × Vehicles × Price × (1/Current MPG − 1/Target MPG)

Calculate current annual fuel cost by dividing total annual miles by current MPG and multiplying by fuel price. Do the same with the target MPG. The difference between current and projected fuel costs is your annual savings. Divide by vehicle count for per-vehicle savings.

Fleet: 40 vehicles, current 8 MPG, target 9.5 MPG, 80,000 miles/vehicle/year, $3.85/gallon

Current fuel cost: 40 × 80,000 ÷ 8 × $3.85 = $1,540,000/year
Target fuel cost: 40 × 80,000 ÷ 9.5 × $3.85 = $1,296,842/year
Annual savings: $1,540,000 – $1,296,842 = $243,158/year
Per vehicle: $243,158 ÷ 40 = $6,079/vehicle/year
