  • Assignment and training acknowledgement fields
  • An ungated, printable format for the shop or yard

How to use it

  1. 1

Assess the hazards of each task and select the PPE that addresses them — PPE is the last line of defense, after engineering and work-practice controls.

  2. 2

Issue the head-to-toe items appropriate to the role and confirm proper fit.

  3. 3

Inspect PPE for damage and wear before each use; replace anything compromised.

  4. 4

Record the assignment and the worker's training acknowledgement.

  5. 5

Re-assess when tasks, equipment, or hazards change.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions buyers usually ask once the category, software, or rollout details start getting more specific.

A

Under OSHA's PPE standard (29 CFR 1910 Subpart I), employers must assess workplace hazards and provide appropriate PPE, generally at no cost to the employee for required items. Verify the current standard and the limited exceptions.

A

No — PPE is the last line of defense in the hierarchy of controls. Eliminate or engineer out the hazard first, then use work practices, and use PPE to protect against the residual risk that remains.

A

Do a hazard assessment of the task: identify impact, chemical, noise, dust, cut, and fall hazards, then match PPE to each. A job safety analysis (JSA) is a good way to document this for routine tasks.

A

Whenever it's damaged, contaminated, worn beyond use, or past its service life. Inspect PPE before each use, and replace respirator cartridges, harnesses, and other lifed items on their schedule.
