Free Reefer Unit Inspection Checklist
A refrigerated-trailer (reefer) inspection checklist covering the cooling unit, fuel, airflow, and temperature integrity — the items a standard trailer check doesn't cover and that protect a cold-chain load.

What you get
- Pre-cool, fuel, and refrigeration-unit start-up checks
- Setpoint, continuous/cycle mode, and temperature-verification items
- Airflow, chute, and door-seal integrity checks that protect the load
- Alarm-code and defrost verification before loading
- An ungated, printable format for the driver or yard tech
How to use it
- 1
Start the reefer and let it reach setpoint before loading, confirming it pulls down to temperature.
- 2
Check unit fuel level and top off — a reefer that runs out of fuel in transit can spoil the load.
- 3
Verify the setpoint, mode (continuous vs cycle-sentry), and that the discharge/return air temps make sense.
- 4
Inspect door seals, the air chute, and bulkhead so cold air circulates and outside air is kept out.
- 5
Note any alarm codes, clear or diagnose them, and record the pre-trip temperature before sealing the load.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the questions buyers usually ask once the category, software, or rollout details start getting more specific.
Pre-cooling brings the box to setpoint so the unit isn't fighting ambient heat plus warm product at once. Loading into a warm box can push temperatures out of spec and risk the entire load, especially for frozen freight.
Continuous runs the unit constantly to hold a tight temperature — used for sensitive fresh produce. Cycle-sentry cycles the unit on and off to save fuel — common for frozen loads that tolerate small swings. Set the mode to the load's requirement.
No. Run the standard trailer inspection for coupling, brakes, lights, and tires, and use this reefer checklist on top of it for the cooling system and cold-chain items.
Keep the pre-trip temperature, setpoint, and any download from the unit's recorder. For food shipments, additional recordkeeping may apply under food-safety transport rules — verify the requirements for your commodity.
