What Fleet Utilization Rate Means

Fleet utilization rate measures the percentage of your fleet that is actively being used at any given time. It can be measured by vehicle count (how many vehicles are in use vs. total) or by time (how many productive hours vs. total available hours). How to Calculate Fleet Utilization

Vehicle Utilization = (Vehicles in Use ÷ Total Vehicles) × 100

For vehicle utilization, divide the number of vehicles actively in use by the total number of vehicles in your fleet. For time utilization, divide total hours of productive use by total available vehicle-hours. Both are expressed as percentages. Track both daily and as rolling averages for trend analysis.

Example Calculation

Fleet: 50 total vehicles, 42 in active use
Hours: 500 available hours/day, 380 in use

Vehicle utilization: 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%
Time utilization: 380 ÷ 500 × 100 = 76%
Idle vehicles: 50 – 42 = 8 vehicles
Idle hours: 500 – 380 = 120 hours/day wasted
