Free Driver CPC Training Record

GOV.UK states it plainly: you must do 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years. If you drive both lorries and buses professionally, you only need to complete one set of training every 5 years rather than one for each.

GOV.UK says a driver working in the UK and Europe must complete 35 hours of International courses only; if their hours include National courses they will receive a National Driver CPC and will not be able to drive professionally in Europe. A driver working in the UK only can take National courses, or a mix. GOV.UK also warns that once a National card is issued, the International hours behind it cannot be reused for an International card — which is why the classification column on this record matters more than the hours column.

DVSA's guidance for training providers states that an International Driver CPC course must be at least 7 hours long and may be split over 2 consecutive days, and that a National Driver CPC course must be at least 3 hours 30 minutes long. Modular International courses must be run on consecutive days. For National courses the guidance says a course lasting more than 7 hours can be split over 2 days that do not have to be consecutive.

GOV.UK states the driver cannot drive professionally until they have finished the training, and that a driver can be fined up to £1,000 for driving professionally without Driver CPC. Training already taken is not lost — it still counts for five years from the date of the course — but training taken more than five years ago no longer counts towards the 35 hours. The next deadline falls five years after the training is finished.

The training centre. GOV.UK tells drivers that the training centre will put the training on their Driver CPC training record, and to contact the centre if it is not showing 5 days after the course. DVSA's provider guidance requires training to be recorded within 5 working days of the course ending. A course taken outside the Driver CPC system will not be uploaded by the provider at all — GOV.UK says to email DVSA with the details in that case.

Only with a reason. DVSA's provider guidance says drivers can only repeat the same course if they have a specific need, that leaving training late is not an acceptable reason, and that DVSA can cancel the hours a driver got from a repeated course taken without a good reason. Record why a repeat was taken on the row, not after the fact.
