Drive a representative route and score backing, turning, intersection, and highway maneuvers.

  4. 4

Total the scores and record an overall pass/fail with notes on any deficiencies.

  5. 5

If the driver passes, complete and sign the road-test certificate and file it in the driver qualification file.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions buyers usually ask once the category, software, or rollout details start getting more specific.

A

Under 49 CFR 391.31, a carrier must give a road test (or accept an equivalent, such as a valid CDL or a prior road-test certificate) before a driver operates a CMV. Confirm which equivalent your operation accepts and document the decision.

A

FMCSA allows a carrier to accept a valid CDL in lieu of a road test for certain vehicles, but not all. Many carriers still road-test every new hire for safety. Verify what 391.33 permits for your vehicle types.

A

The test should be given and evaluated by a person competent to do so. The examiner signs the certificate. Keep the form and the resulting certificate in the driver qualification file.

A

Yes. The road-test certificate (or the accepted equivalent) is one of the documents the driver qualification file must contain under 49 CFR 391.51.
