A maintenance schedule looks forward — it tells you what is due. A service history log looks backward — it records what was actually done. You need both: the schedule to plan, the history to prove and analyze.
A complete history supports warranty claims, strengthens resale value, and gives you the data for repair-versus-replace decisions. It is also invaluable when diagnosing a recurring fault, because you can see everything that has been done to the vehicle.
Keep them at least for the life of the vehicle, and longer where regulation or warranty terms require. Commercial-vehicle inspection and maintenance records have specific FMCSA retention periods — defer to the current rules.
