CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist
A CDL pre-trip inspection checklist covering the components a driver must check before operating a commercial vehicle — for the CDL exam and daily pre-trip routine.
Built and reviewed by the FleetOpsClub research team. Print the preview free, or get the editable file by email.
What's included
- The pre-trip walkaround grouped by engine compartment, cab, exterior, and brakes
- Coverage of the items examiners commonly expect on the CDL pre-trip test
- A consistent daily routine drivers can repeat before every trip
- Defect notes column for items that need attention
- Ungated, printable format sized for a clipboard or cab folder
How to use it
- 1
Start at the engine compartment with the engine off — check fluids, belts, hoses, and the steering linkage.
- 2
Move to the cab: start the engine, check gauges, lights, wipers, horn, and mirrors.
- 3
Walk the exterior clockwise checking lights, tires, wheels, suspension, and the frame.
- 4
Perform the air brake check (build-up, leak-down, low-air warning, and pushrod travel as required).
- 5
Note any defect; do not operate the vehicle if a defect affects safe operation.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the questions buyers usually ask once the category, software, or rollout details start getting more specific.
It covers the same components examiners expect a driver to identify and check, but exam scoring and required call-outs vary by state. Use it to learn the routine, then practice against your state's CDL manual.
A thorough pre-trip on a tractor-trailer typically takes 15–30 minutes when done properly. It gets faster with repetition, but never skip the brake check.
Document it and don't operate the vehicle if the defect affects safe operation. Route safety-critical defects to maintenance and record them on your DVIR.
