Garmin eLog is $249.99 once, and that is the whole commercial story.

Garmin's product page carries the price in its structured data, its 2017 launch announcement gave the same $249.99 suggested retail, and the figure has not changed in nine years.

There is no subscription, no activation fee, and no contract, because there is no ongoing billing relationship to govern.

Set against a subscribed ELD at a typical $25 to $35 a vehicle per month, the device pays for itself somewhere between the eighth and eleventh month on one truck. On a second truck it pays for itself again.

The arithmetic is genuinely favourable and it is the single reason most buyers arrive at this product.

Verified from the official pricing page on September 30, 2026. View source Garmin publishes the price on its own product page for the Garmin eLog: "price": "249.99" with "priceCurrency": "USD", and $249.99 appears in the page itself. It is a one-time hardware purchase with no subscription.

What $249.99 actually buys

The box contains the ELD and a 6-pin J1708 adaptor. The device connects over 9-pin J1939 or 6-pin J1708 and pairs by Bluetooth to a phone or tablet running the free Garmin eLog app, or to one of six compatible dezl navigators.

It is not an OBD-II device. Garmin states plainly that the eLog is not compatible with vehicles using the OBD2 protocol (SAE J1979), which rules out light vehicles.

Volvo trucks using the 16-pin J1962 connector need a 16-pin to 9-pin adapter that Garmin sells separately and does not price publicly.

There is no ongoing cost, and no ongoing service either

A subscription buys more than software access. It usually buys a hosted back office, log retention off the device, and a support relationship.

Garmin charges nothing recurring and supplies none of those things.

Garmin's product page states that records are securely stored on your compatible smartphone, never in the cloud. The Garmin eLog Web Portal has been discontinued, and Garmin's support site now carries a notice to that effect.

Getting logs off a driver's phone means a manual CSV export from that phone, one driver at a time.

Where Garmin eLog fits

Garmin eLog is the right answer for an owner-operator who wants compliance without a subscription, and the wrong answer for anyone managing drivers they cannot physically walk up to. FMCSA lists all three of Garmin's registrations with a data transfer method of Local (USB, Bluetooth) — not telematic — and Garmin's own web portal for the product has been shut down. That is not a missing feature that might arrive later; it is what the device is registered as.

Garmin eLog is best for

Garmin eLog fits an owner-operator or a one-to-three truck operation where the person who drives is also the person who files. It suits a fleet that wants to stop paying a monthly ELD bill and can live with logs that live on each driver's handset. It is a poor fit for anyone who needs to see hours from an office, and a bad fit for any operation that needs IFTA out of the same device.

Why Garmin eLog stands out

Every other ELD in this category is a subscription. Garmin's is not, and Garmin has held the price at $249.99 since 2017 rather than quietly converting the product to a recurring model. In a category where roughly three quarters of vendors will not publish a price at all, a nine-year-stable published figure is worth something on its own.

Commercial fit for Garmin eLog

Treat this as a hardware purchase, not a software decision. There is no renewal to negotiate, no term to be locked into, and no vendor relationship to manage after the sale — and equally, no vendor doing anything for you after the sale. Buy it if compliance is the whole requirement. Look elsewhere the moment fleet visibility, IFTA, or remote log review enters the brief.

Nine years of price stability in a category that mostly refuses to publish a price is unusual, and it means the payback maths you do today will still hold next year. Against a $30 a month subscription the device is ahead after roughly eight months.

No contract, because there is nothing to cancel

There is no term, no auto-renewal, no notice period and no early-termination exposure, because there is no recurring billing relationship. In a category where cancellation disputes are the single most common complaint against budget vendors, buying the hardware outright removes an entire class of risk.

The eLog connects over 9-pin J1939 or 6-pin J1708, with the 6-pin adaptor in the box. That is the correct connector family for heavy trucks and it reads the engine ECM directly. Garmin explicitly excludes OBD-II, which is a limitation for light vehicles and a signal of seriousness for heavy ones.

Garmin support runs from Olathe, Kansas on 913-397-0872 and 1-800-800-1020, Monday to Friday 7am to 7pm Central, with live chat. Hours are published rather than claimed as 24/7. Email replies are quoted at three to five business days, which is slow but stated honestly.

FMCSA registers it as a local-transfer device — there is no back office

This is the finding that should decide the purchase. All three Garmin registrations — GE1I01, GE1A01 and GE1D01 — list a data transfer method of Local (USB, Bluetooth). Not telematic, not web services. Every other vendor in this comparison set is registered telematic. Combined with the shutdown of the Garmin eLog Web Portal, there is no way for a fleet manager to see a driver's hours without physically getting to that driver's phone. Garmin's own FAQ has been reported to claim all four transfer methods, which contradicts the registry; the registry is what an inspector works from.

IFTA was promised in 2017 and has never shipped

Garmin support states flatly that the Garmin eLog ELD does not have the ability to record International Fuel Tax Agreement documentation. Garmin's 2017 press release, still live on garmin.com today, says the eLog will soon include DVIR, IFTA logs and Bluetooth transfer. DVIR and Bluetooth arrived. IFTA has not, nine years on. Anyone researching from that press release gets the wrong answer, so budget for a separate IFTA process.

Bluetooth disconnects are the dominant complaint across every review pool

Across 497 App Store ratings (4.26), 876 Play ratings (4.45) and 1,317 Amazon ratings (3.9), the recurring complaint is the same: the device drops its Bluetooth link, sometimes with an audible alarm, and reviewers report having to physically unplug the unit under the dash to get it to reconnect. Amazon's distribution is a barbell rather than a bell curve — 57% five-star against 16% one-star — which is what a product with one polarising failure mode looks like.

Duty-status editing has produced actual violations, by reviewers' accounts

Multiple reviewers describe being unable to certify off-duty days that span more than one day, and at least one reports a resulting DOT violation. Others cite forced re-logins and an unreliable hours-remaining display. These are compliance-critical behaviours rather than convenience gripes, and they are the strongest argument for treating the low price as a trade rather than a free win.

Not certified in Canada, and the dezl compatibility list is a trap

There are zero Garmin entries on the Transport Canada ELD list, so cross-border operations need another device. Separately, thirteen dezl models can pair with the eLog and display logs, but only six — dezl 780, dezlCam 785, and OTR 800, 810, 1000 and 1010 — can actually replace the smartphone. Buying a dezl 580 or an OTR 500, 610, 620, 700 or 710 to go phone-free buys the wrong unit.

Compliance scope: HOS and DVIR yes, IFTA no

The eLog records hours of service and supports the Driver Vehicle Inspection Report, both confirmed by Garmin's own support documentation. It reads power status, motion, odometer and engine hours off the ECM over J1939 or J1708, which is what the FMCSA specification requires of any registered device.

IFTA is the gap, and it is a hard one. Garmin states the device cannot record IFTA documentation.

A fleet that needs quarterly fuel-tax reporting is running a second process regardless of what it pays for compliance.

How an inspection actually goes

Because the device is registered for local transfer, a roadside transfer happens over USB or Bluetooth at the vehicle rather than by web service or email. That is a legitimate registered option under the specification, not a deficiency, and drivers should know which method their device uses before they need it.

What it does mean is that the display has to be present and working. With logs held on the driver's phone and no cloud copy, a dead handset is a materially worse problem than it would be on a telematic device.

Who this architecture actually serves

One driver who owns the truck, owns the phone and files their own logs loses nothing to local storage and saves the subscription. That buyer is well served, and the review scores from that cohort are the positive ones.

A manager with five drivers spread across three states cannot use this. There is no portal to log into, no fleet view, and no way to check a driver's remaining hours without contacting them.

The registry tells you this before you buy, which is why it is worth reading the registry.

What the review pools agree on

Praise is monotonous in a useful way: reviewers like the absence of a subscription, and say so in almost identical language across all three platforms. There is very little praise for anything else, which is a fair summary of the product.

Complaints cluster tightly too — Bluetooth reliability, log editing, forced re-login, and weak retention once logs leave the app. The consistency across 2,690 combined ratings makes these more credible than a scattered complaint profile would be.

Evaluating Garmin eLog before a demo

This is a short evaluation because there is very little to negotiate. The price is fixed and published, there is no contract, and the decisive question is architectural rather than commercial.

Answer one question first: does anyone other than the driver need to see these logs? If yes, stop here and buy a telematic device. No amount of saved subscription justifies a compliance record you cannot reach.
